Guests notice how a hotel feels long before they think about its design. Quiet rooms, smooth operation and a consistent finish all contribute to that experience, and doors sit at the centre of this, even if they rarely get the attention. Guests may not consciously register each feature, but they notice how a room sounds at night, how safe they feel when they close their door and how consistent the finishes and aesthetic feel throughout the building.
Safety should feel built in
Fire safety is a key requirement in hotels, particularly when guests are unfamiliar with their surroundings and rely on clear, protected escape routes. In most hotel settings, fire doors are specified as FD30 or FD60, meaning they provide 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance under test conditions. Where smoke control is also required, doors are specified as FD30S or FD60S, incorporating seals that restrict the passage of smoke. Together, these measures help contain fire and smoke within a defined area and give guests more time to evacuate safely.
In practice, this means protecting key areas such as guestroom entrances, corridors and stairwells, where fire doors are used to maintain compartmentation and keep escape routes clear of smoke and flames for as long as possible.
Components must be tested together to achieve the required fire rating, which is why factory-assembled doorsets should be specified rather than creating a kit for assembly on site. This approach delivers consistent performance and reduces the risk of installation errors affecting safety. This information can then be built on over time, allowing building owners to log routine maintenance and inspection records. Quiet rooms are not optional
Noise is one of the most common sources of dissatisfaction in hotels, and it often originates in areas just outside the room.
Acoustic performance starts with the construction of the door. Effective sound reduction relies on how materials are combined within the core, as using a mix of layers with different densities helps disrupt the passage of sound across a range of frequencies. This must be supported by effective perimeter seals, which close off the small gaps where noise often escapes, as well as correct installation and surrounding construction. Without these elements working together, even a well-constructed door will struggle to deliver consistent results.

Security at the door
A hotel must give guests a clear sense of safety from the moment they enter their room. Doors form the physical barrier between public and private spaces, and their performance has a direct impact on how secure a guest feels during their stay.
Access control is now standard across most hotels, with electronic locks and keyless entry systems used to manage room access and reduce risk. Doorsets need to be designed to accommodate this hardware, so that locks, handles and internal mechanisms work as part of a single system rather than being added later. Without that coordination, there is a risk of poor fit, reduced performance or delays during installation, all of which can affect both security and usability.
