Timber doorset manufacturer JELD-WEN has reached a major milestone in its Sheffield site transition, with the relocation of production machinery now well underway as operations move to the company’s new facility at Bessemer Park.
The new manufacturing facility, which will be fully operational later this year, forms part of JELD-WEN’s long-term strategy to strengthen its UK manufacturing footprint and support customers with increased future capacity, enhanced operational flexibility and further service reliability.
The machinery move represents one of the most complex stages of the transition, with manufacturing equipment being relocated in carefully planned phases across eight operational zones. 18 months of preparation, daily coordination meetings and detailed site management have supported a safe and controlled move while maintaining continuity for customers.
The relocation included the transfer of 65 existing production assets, all of which were successfully recommissioned to ensure full compliance with industry operation, maintenance and safety standards at the new facility.
To manage the complexity of the move, JELD-WEN has implemented a structured programme of machinery relocation supported by daily operational reviews, contractor coordination meetings and regular Gemba walks, enabling teams to identify and resolve issues quickly on the factory floor.
As part of JELD-WEN’s commitment to employee safety, the site was divided into eight operational zones, allowing machinery to be moved safely and efficiently in phases while maintaining access across the wider facility. Employees received daily communications outlining planned activities and temporary restrictions, helping to keep teams informed and supporting safe pedestrian movement around active relocation areas.
Ensuring continuity of supply for its customers was also a key consideration. To minimise disruption, JELD-WEN implemented a comprehensive planning framework, including extensive stock building, detailed material management, and a carefully balanced inter-site movement strategy between its Penrith and Sheffield manufacturing sites.
“Relocating an operational manufacturing facility is a significant project that requires extensive planning, communication and teamwork. Every stage of the machinery relocation has been carefully coordinated to maintain safety, minimise disruption and support continuity for our customers.
Reaching this stage represents an important milestone in our move to Bessemer Park. The new facility will provide a strong foundation for future growth and help us to continue to deliver the quality, reliability and service our customers expect.”
