JELD-WEN reach zero manufacturing waste to landfill milestone

Specialist door manufacturer JELD-WEN has reached a landmark in its sustainability strategy, with zero manufacturing waste from its Penrith site now going to landfill. This milestone marks a significant step in JELD-WEN’s mission to lead the way in responsible and sustainable manufacturing.

As part of JELD-WEN’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals for 2050 for its Penrith site, the company has introduced innovative projects and practices to eliminate landfill-bound manufacturing waste.

Evaluating waste production processes and identifying where products could be diverted from landfill was key to achieving this breakthrough and relied on the close collaboration between employees and national recycling networks.

“The Penrith team found that plastic banding was difficult to separate from other waste, so by sorting waste into designated bins, plastic pieces were able to be removed and recycled or reused.”

He continues: “A similar assessment found that ash from biomass boilers - a by-product of the manufacturing process - could be diverted from landfill and recycled as a component of tarmac and used for paving roads.”

JELD-WEN’s Penrith facility has so far achieved 50% of its sustainability goals, not only eliminating manufacturing waste sent to landfill but also committing to 100% global sourcing of sustainable or certified wood.

In addition, the Penrith facility has reduced the use of all single-use plastics used in production, replacing all glazed-door packaging with recyclable cardboard, to remove 17 tons of plastic from the manufacturing supply chain.

White said: “It is down to the dedication of the team at Penrith and commitment of the company that we continue to make great strides towards meeting our ESG goals for 2050, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.

“Our ESG goals are not only designed to lower the environmental impact of the company, but to improve employee health and safety, and we remain committed to finding innovative solutions to support our journey towards net-zero, and ensuring the highest standards in product manufacturing and performance are met.”
