When Mr and Mrs Leech decided they wanted to build a ‘home for life’ that would help them enjoy their retirement, they enlisted the help of Welsh Oak Frame to design and build their home.

The couple had renovated numerous old properties in the past but found that, no matter what they did to improve them, they were always settling for a layout that didn’t suit their needs. After finding the perfect 0.5 acre plot of land in Wales that already had planning permission and existing foundations in place, they took the decision to build their own home from scratch that would be suitable for them to live in and enjoy throughout their retirement years.

Whilst managing the project, Welsh Oak Frame recommended JELD-WEN as the main external joinery supplier for the oak framed home. JELD-WEN’s Stormsure Oak Casement windows were selected for their performance and natural beauty that would be in keeping with the overall look and feel of the property.

Mark Jones, general manager at Welsh Oak Frame, commented: “JELD-WEN was the natural choiceto supply the oak windows for the project.Their complementary products matchedbeautifully with the oak frame building, toprovide a picturesque finish.”

In addition to the appearance and specific lifestyle requirements that the couple had, they also required the property to be as thermally efficient as possible. This meant that every part of the build had to be considered carefully, and the combination of the oak frame construction, high performance timber windows and excellent quality insulation throughout meant that this could be achieved.

Tony Pell, Windows Product Manager at JELD-WEN commented, “The Stormsure Oak Casement window was the perfect choice to achieve the thermal performance requirements for the property with a BFRC energy rating of A-B, and U values as low as 1.3W/m2K. This combined with additional features such as espagnolette multi-point locking and premium hardware from ERA made the oak casement window the ideal choice for this project.”

Now that the house has been completed, the Leeches are enjoying the fruits of their labour, as they haven’t had to turn on their heating at all over the winter. Mrs Leech commented, “We have a lovely multi-fuel stove, which we hardly ever need for warmth.”
