Whole House Transformed With Sliding Folding Patio Doors

A North Yorkshire property has been radically transformed with innovative folding sliding patio doors from JELD-WEN.

The stone built property, the home of architect David Spencer, Principal of DSP Architects LLP, has undergone a major refurbishment and extension which has opened up the basement and flooded both this level and the one above with light.

Mr Spencer selected JELD-WEN's Canberra patio doors as he recognised how they would enable him to open up the whole of his living space in his basement, by using Canberra's smooth and simple sliding mechanism and folding them back concertina style to create a minimalistic effect.

When planning out the project, Mr Spencer's aim was to open up the back of the house and extend the living area directly into the garden.  Previously the basement was dark and damp and for this reason was hardly ever used.  The addition of the Canberra patio doors has created a light, airy living and entertaining space, as well as adding a stylish fifth bedroom to the basement.

David Spencer said: "I am delighted with the folding sliding doors and the huge difference they have made in adding light to our home. This was a major conversion and I wanted a top quality product to reflect the work carried out here. The Canberra patio doors are robust and let in lots of light without compromising on security and energy efficiency, which was just what I was looking for."

Mr Spencer required white painted patio doors that would complement the aesthetics of the windows in his home, so selected the doors in JELD-WEN's hi build factory finish, which provides a superior appearance and prolonged the lifespan of the product.

For the basement, Mr Spencer specified two four leaf Canberra patio doors, which can be slid across the length of the back of the property, opening it up completely.  He also joined these together with two fixed glazed panels creating a fully glazed wall effect.

"I really wanted to introduce as much light as possible into the basement," Mr Spencer adds.  "There are no windows at the other side of the wall, so we needed to make the most of the light available on the garden side."

Above this, at ground floor level, Mr Spencer selected two Canberra patio doors of 3.6m width, which were selected to replace a pair of French doors and Dining Room window. Glass balustrading is used for the balcony area to provide a complete view with no obstructing posts and enhance safety. The refurbishment involved making major structural alterations to the property, with the work taking around six months to complete and was undertaken by Evora Construction Ltd.

The extension has added 90m² to the size of the property, with its stunning basement patio doors leading onto the mature lawn and garden. The property, which dates back to the 1960s, enjoys a village location and overlooks parkland and the beautiful River Wharfe.

Mr Spencer explains: "We were really impressed with the service provided by JELD-WEN and with the quality of the patio doors.  We have had lots of positive comments from friends and family and the doors have certainly added an impressive focal point to our home."

Ian Purkis, Technical Director of JELD-WEN said: "Our Canberra patio doors are a premium product and perfectly complement properties of distinction such as this one. It is very satisfying to see what a huge difference they have made to the property and the lifestyle of homeowners, as they create lighter, airy living spaces, whilst bringing the outdoors indoors."

Renowned for its truly inspirational design, the Canberra was one of the first sliding folding patio doors to be introduced into the UK.  Its robust 54mm thick door leaves can be supplied either unfinished, for buyers to decorate to their own tastes, or factory painted or stained to enhance its appearance and prolongs its lifespan.

Energy efficiency is a key benefit of the Canberra, which is supplied with a standard specification of 24mm Low-E insulated glass, ensuring it is compliant with Part L and ensures thermal efficiency.  However, customers are able to upgrade this specification to achieve an even lower U value down to 1.3W/m²K with gas filled triple glazed units, which improves energy efficiency even further.

All JELD-WEN's patio doors are manufactured in the UK from Chain of Custody certified timber, which ensures it originates from well managed forests with strict reforestation programmes.
