Responding to the unique requirements of modern learning environments, the Swedoor interior doorset range successfully completed the look for Urjala Comprehensive School, a state-of-the-art educational development in Finland.
Designed for around 400 students, Urjala School accommodates children across a wide range of ages and abilities – from preschoolers, up to high school seniors – which demanded a flexible and versatile approach to the building’s design.
It was essential that the architects chose a door supplier that could fulfil the multi-purpose function of the school, whilst ensuring they could create a learning environment that was engaging and inspiring.
Swedoor, which forms part of the global JELD-WEN group, delivered 218 high quality doorsets to the project, including fire-rated and sound-insulated designs, with custom laminate finishes and glazed window configurations.
Typical of any educational project, where doors are in constant use and often subject to high impact, the design specification needed to balance functionality, aesthetics and – above all – safety.
With this in mind, key features of the project included:
Enhanced learning environment
Acoustic insulation on the doors was specified to ensure classrooms were quiet and students could focus on their learning.
Glass panels were included as part of the doorset customisation, to increase natural light and heighten the sense of space, with the aim of keeping students alert and engaged throughout the day.
Certified safety
Independent testing against leading industry standards meant that Swedoor could provide ultimate peace of mind for compliance and fire resistance.
Glazed panels, installed on either (or both) sides of the doors, or on top as upper windows, were also made from independently tested and fire rated glass.
A lasting, low maintenance finish
The laminate-surfacing offered enhanced durability, compared to painted and veneered finishes, for premium resistance against wear and tear in busy areas. Completed with birch door edging, the laminate design is also easy to keep clean, ensuring low maintenance and high performance for years to come.
Design flexibility
From an extensive range of laminates to choose from, varying in colour, patterns and wood grains, a neutral grey was selected to complement the vibrant colours of the walls throughout the building.
