Communal Stairs

Our communal stairs team understands what house builders and contractors need from their suppliers - competitive rates, dedicated account management and specification drawings.

JELD-WEN is ISO 14001 accredited and offers a wide variety of timber staircases, made from wood supplied by Chain of Custody certified forests. We also have many styles of handrail, newel posts and spindles to suit all types of construction projects.

Proven and tested

The specification of staircases has long been considered one of the most complex jobs for those building homes or apartments.

There are a number of British Standard requirements and Building Regulations to which you must adhere, including Approved Document M, which relates to the access and use of stairs for mobility and Approved Document K 2000 that covers protection from falling, collision and impact. Approved Document B 2000 also concerns the fire protection offered by stairs.

We have worked hard to drive up standards in stair production and JELD-WEN is the first volume manufacturer to be independently assessed by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) for domestic and common flights and by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) for our fire protected stairs.

Fire testing

JELD-WEN is a member of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). This independent scheme ensures our domestic, communal and fire protected stairs meet the high standards of quality and safety expected of manufacturers. We are audited regularly and our products are fire tested to ensure they are suitable for use in communal stairwells.

Rigorous tests carried out by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), as part of the BWF scheme, confirmed that our timber stairs are an effective means of escape, even after an extremely hazardous fire.

These tests concluded that a JELD-WEN staircase will not be consumed by fire and that it will maintain its normal function in the event of a fire in the stair enclosure. Our stairs proved to be capable of carrying a large static load after the fire test, which confirmed they are suitable for use as escape stairs, providing a safe route out of a multi storey building.

Tony Baker of the BRE/LPCB, said: "This certification is about giving specifiers and developers more confidence about products that meet fire protection requirements. They should be in no doubt that JELD-WEN timber stairs can be specified for low and medium rise blocks, in the knowledge that they help minimise fire risks in the buildings they are designing, specifying or managing."
