TIMBER WINDOWS AND PATIO DOORS TRANSFORM 1960s HOUSE INTO STUNNING LIVING SPACE

The Nixon family of Nantwich in Cheshire have demonstrated how high quality bespoke timber windows and patio doors from JELD-WEN can transform a property and enhance the lifestyle of its owners.
Robert and Tracey Nixon purchased the five bedroom home in 2009 and their aim was to capture the original beauty of this striking property, which was hidden behind heavy-framed PVC-U windows. The house was built in 1967 but modeled on the simple, clean lines of Georgian architecture with large, airy rooms and well proportioned windows.
The couple have spent two years renovating their home, and wanted traditionally-styled timber windows and patio doors to complement the style of the property and their rural setting. They invited JELD-WEN to quote for the project, after seeing a display of the company’s high quality timber products in their local builders’ merchant showroom.
Robert Nixon says: “We loved the shape of the house, but it had been built from an ugly brown type of industrial brick and had been fitted with chunky PVC-U double glazed windows, which just weren’t in keeping with the architecture of the property.”
The Nixons’ refurbishments to the house included carrying out structural alterations to link the interior to the garden via three new patio doors. They also rendered over the brickwork and painted the exterior in an aesthetically pleasing shade of cream, whilst re-roofing the property in a complementary slate.
Robert says: “We had a pretty clear idea of the look we wanted to achieve but we knew we couldn’t order windows ‘off the peg’ because several of the frames were in non-standard sizes. We also wanted authentic sliding sash windows at the front of the house and we were keen to feature patio doors with Georgian bars.
“We asked several local joiners for a price on making timber windows to order, but the cost was going to be far too high, it was then we saw JELD-WEN’s display. The company’s representative came around to see us and we were immediately impressed by his professional attitude and product knowledge. We showed him a sketch of the designs we wanted and he said it wouldn’t be a problem to produce the bespoke sizes we required. He even brought us some drawings to look at before the windows were produced, just to check we were completely happy with them.
“We were really impressed with the service from JELD-WEN, and with the quality of the windows and doors they supplied. Not only that, but the overall price was much less than we had been quoted by smaller joinery firms.”
JELD-WEN supplied 26 windows from its Cottage range and six Sliding Sash Marginal Bar windows. The patio doorsets were from JELD-WEN’s Clifton range, and each was fitted with co-ordinating side lights to maximise the amount of natural light in the house. All the windows and doors were made-to-measure, and were supplied factory finished in white to provide a superior look and a durable paint coating, which is guaranteed to last for at least 10 years.
JELD-WEN offers a market-leading 40 year guarantee on its softwood windows, which are available in a wide range of styles, materials and configurations, all with high levels of security and durability. A 60 year guarantee is available as an option on certain styles, with frames receiving an advanced preservative treatment.
Robert and Tracey were so happy with the result that when they moved on to the final stages of the renovation, which included replacing all the internal doors and building a new entrance porch, they ordered all the additional doors and windows from JELD-WEN.
The couple run their business Nixon Pumps from their home, supplying diesel pumps to the haulage industry. Their office is one of the rooms fitted with JELD-WEN’s patio doors, creating the perfect relaxed working environment. Also sharing the home are their three sons and a boisterous Labrador, so the tough paint finish and durable handles and hinges are a bonus for the family.
Robert says: “It’s a pleasure to be in the house now – we’re so pleased to have achieved the look we wanted, but the new windows have made a massive difference to the amount of natural light in the house. The extra patio doors have also added so much light to our home and given us the opportunity to bring the outdoors and indoors closer together – we’re looking forward to having barbecues on the patio area in the summer.”
John Shaw, Production and Commercial Director at JELD-WEN said: “Our timber windows have been found to add a significant amount of value to a property. With period properties like this one, timber windows are the ideal choice, especially as this is a property set in the Cheshire countryside, where it can help with meeting planning requirements. It is very satisfying to hear how self builders and renovators are enhancing not only their homes but also their lifestyles through windows and patio doors that mean they can create a lighter, airy living space, whilst choosing what is the only truly sustainable material.”
JELD-WEN has an advanced production process which means it has the ability to produce bespoke highly engineered timber windows and patio doors to meet specific customer requirements and with a shorter lead times than other joinery firms.
