JELD-WEN Fired Up For Fire Door Safety Week

This September, JELD-WEN, the UK’s leading manufacturer of timber windows, doors and stairs is championing the British Woodworking Federation’s (BWF) Fire Door Safety Week 2015 (14th – 20th September). The annual initiative aims to raise awareness of fire safety and the need for correct installation and maintenance of fire doors in commercial and residential properties.

Despite over 3 million new fire doors being bought and installed every year in the UK, many industry professionals are still making dangerous mistakes when it comes to fitting and specifying fire doors.

In an inspection sample by the Fire Door Inspection Scheme of 677 fire doors across 34 different sites, it was found that over 61% had a problem with smoke or fire seals, 230 fire doors had gaps bigger than 3mm, 20% had unsuitable hinges and 1 in 6 had damage to the door leaf.

Chris Miller, Doors Product Manager at JELD-WEN, said: “In 2013-2014 there were 212,000 fire incidents in Great Britain, with 322 resulting in a fatality, so it’s essential that the industry gets behind the initiative to help save lives.

“The easiest way to back Fire Door Safety Week is by choosing quality suppliers that are members of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme who undergo rigorous assessments to ensure products are fit for purpose. All JELD-WEN fire doors are third party assessed by the scheme giving customer’s confidence that they are buying a high quality product.”

Iain McIlwee, Chief Executive of the BWF, said: “We set up the BWF-CERTIFIRE scheme in partnership with major manufacturers like JELD-WEN to increase the standard of fire doors across the industry. Fire door safety week is a great way of raising awareness of the issues surrounding fire door installation and specification and we really appreciate JELD-WEN’s efforts in backing the initiative.

As a founding member of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme, JELD-WEN offers a wide range of fire resistant doors and doorsets with 30 and 60 minute fire ratings.
